Chinese Medicine(CM) is an integrated system of primary health care that has an uninterrupted history of use and development in China and other parts of the world that dates back to over two thousand years. CM can be considered one of the original holistic medical systems in the world. It has a unique, holistic way of looking at health and disease that has been challenged and refined throughout its long history providing natural solutions to modern day health concerns.
This unique view of health and disease is based on the concept of holism which sees all the body systems (the parts) intimately connected and working together to maintain balance or dynamic homeostasis in the body (the whole). This concept of holism extends beyond our bodies and considers environmental, sociological, emotional and psycho-spiritual aspects as interrelated, interdependent, and inseparable from our human experience.
CM views illness as disharmony or disrupted homeostasis between the parts which manifest as symptoms in the whole. Because of this unique approach, CM is capable of treating a wide variety of common modern day health complaints. A CM practitioner uses various tools such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage, diet and lifestyle advice to restore balance among the body systems and thereby restoring health to the body as a whole.
